5 things to do in Bangkok

Bangkok is one of those endless cities where the day never really comes to an end, so much is the bustle and the intensity lived in town. To the tourists that visit the city for the first time there are obvious things they’ll certainly visit, like the Wat Pho (Temple of the Reclining Buddha) or the Grand Palace, like I talked about in another article.

To those who wish to live more the city and get to know a bit besides the temples, here are 5 things not to miss in Bangkok.

1. Boat ride at Chao Phraya River

Also known as the river of kings, it was from its margins that Bangkok started to develop, acquiring importance by the time of Ayutthaya‘s decay. A ride on the river allows a view over the dichotomy of the worlds of the city, since the luxurious hotels in the margins, the temples like Wat Arun and the oldest and most traditional areas of town. It also serves as connection to those who wish to visit the famous Ko Kret Island or even travel to Ayutthaya for an one day walk in the ruins

2. Ride by Tuk Tuk

Bangkok is a chaotic city, considered the city with most traffic in the entire World, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have some interesting experiences.  The disadvantage of having a subway line (BTS) that only covers a small portion of the city is leveled by the accessible cab prices (always look for a cab with a taximeter) and the famous Tuk Tuk. These are a unique and unmissable experience in Thailand, whether in Bangkok, Chiang Mai or any other town. As you know, negotiate the price in advance and hold up tight during the trip!

3. Sky Bars

Bangkok is known for its skyscrapers, but even more famous are their bars and restaurants at open sky, occupying the top of the buildings. The most known is for sure the Sky Bar Scirocco, at the Lebua Hotel at State Tour, famous for being set to the movie Hangover II. It is certainly the most amazing rooftop bar we’ve ever been, with a modern, cosmopolitan and expensive environment, with plenty of tourists in a climate of relaxation and fun. Other famous rooftops are Vertigo, Park Society and Cloud 47.

4. Visiting the floating markets

Visiting a floating market is one of the first things that come to mind while thinking of visiting Bangkok for the first time. Many times we are dis-encouraged by the distance and the times (you should come pretty early). The biggest, most famous and each time more touristic is the Damnoen Saduak market, located at around 100 km from the city. But don’t despair, there are more markets and closest, like the one in Taling Chan, one of the favorites of the locals and known by the food prepared on the boats; or the Khlong Lat Mayom, while being small has the advantage of having less tourists.

5. Watching a Muay Thai combat

Muay Thai is a martial art transformed into a combat sport, loved by every local, being the official sport of Thailand. A true cultural activity is visiting one of the main stadiums, Lumpini and Ratchadamnoen to watch a few combats. Don’t get carried away by the bets, and have fun.

To those who already visited the city, which is your top of activities in Bangkok?
